Question : Connect & Manage remote SQL 2000 DB from Vista Ultimate (64 Bit)

I am running Vista Ultimate 64 bit.  I have installed SQL Server 2000 & CLient Tools.  My local database is running fine with no errors and my ASP.NET apps are connecting locally without any issues.

My LIVE server is housed in a datacenter and I need to access the LIVE SQL server remotely from my PC.  With windows XP I simply run the "Client Netwrok Utility" that comes as part of the client tools and setup an alias, using TCPIP to my server.  Then in Query Analyser or Enteprise Manager I simply connect to that alias.  I can confirm that on a windows XP machine all this is working fine on the same local network, so Firewall issues have been ruled out, and server issues have been ruled out.

When trying to do the same on Vista I can setup the alias in the "Client Network Utility" using the same settings, ports, as windows XP.  However when I try to connect to this through Query Analyser, or Enteprise Manager, I get a SQL server does not exist or access is denied.  

Clues:

In the "Client Network Utility"  the tab called "DB-Library Options" gives the DB-Library Information for the ntwdblib.dll.  In XP all the info is displayed, but in Vista it just says "N/A" for each of the items.

In Enteprise Manager, normally after creating an alias through the "Client Network Utility" I can see the Alias as a choice of database to connect to (When registering a new database).  In Viusta However this does not show,

I am logged in as an administrator and I have tried all this with all apps running as administrator.

Any Ideas anybody?

I had a feeling that SQL Server 2000 wasn't supported for installation on a Vista machine. Not sure about the client tools. You can always try installing SQL Server 2005 and use the Management Studio tool from that to access your SQL Server 2000 instance
