Question : PPTP VPN and Local Area Connection conflict
I have a PPTP VPN connection setup on my PC using Microsoft XP's builtin VPN client. I am having conflicts with this connection and the local area connection. Whenever I want to go to a website (when I am not connected to the VPN) I am propted to connect to the VPN. If I do not connect then I am unable to connect to the website. It seems the computer wants to use the VPN connection as the default. I have checked the settings, and it is not set as the default connection. Any ideas?
Answer : PPTP VPN and Local Area Connection conflict
>>"is not set as the default connection"
I assume you mean in Internet explorer? If not check IE under tools | Internet options | connections, to make sure the VPN is not the default.
Also, on the same page re-run the Internet set up wizard.
The VPN client will reset the default gateway to be that of the VPN. This should revert back after disconnecting but it sounds like it is "stuck".
A simple reboot might release.
You could try changing the setting that controls this within the VPN client:
control panel | network & sharing center | manage network connections | right click on the VPN virtual adapter/connection and choose properties | Networking | TCP/IP -properties | Advanced | IP settings | un-check "Use default gateway on remote network"
If, still having problems perhaps post a copy of the results from
route print
run from a command line. Do so when the VPN is not connected.
