Question : HP Proliant DL380 G4, Smart Array 6i running Windows 2k3 Small Business Server stopped booting from hard drive
Our HP Proliant DL380 G4, Smart Array 6i is suddenly failing to boot Windows 2k3 Small Business Server from the logical drive.
After installing some Windows updates last week the ser ver suddenly had trouble communicating with our backup tape drive system. I reset the server and now I can no longer boot into windows. It gets to Boot from hardrive C: (see controller settings) blinks for 10 to 15 minutes, then moves on to the NIC.
We have 4 hard drives in a RAID 5 configuration. The Smart Array 6i initializes with 192 MB and shows the 1 logical drive of 101.07 GB and says its OK. The SmartStart disc (7.4) brings up the error of Boot controller Disk Size 0MB and There is no bootable drive configured on the this system.
Multiple diagnostics tests said all devices, including the drives, are working. A BIOS settings test of the says gives a success for finding the boot hard drive but fails on Boot Hard Drive Ready. The controller boot order has the Smart Array 6i first followed by an IDE controller.
So far I have tried:
Disconnecting all external devices.
Resetting the NVRAM.
Reseating the drives, backplate, processors, and PCI cards.
Running at bare minimum configurarion. (1 processor and no PCI cards)
Updating the Smart Array, server, and rom firmware via the most recent Proliant Firware and Maintenance CD.
Running a repair on Windows and adding a updated driver for the smart array.
Boot reconfig on C: via the Windows recovery console.
Nothing has made the slightest bit of difference. It might not matter, but booting from any cd takes quite awhile, usually about 15 to 20 minutes to starting up. Im the best we have at a small non-profit so any help I could get would be fantastic.
Answer : HP Proliant DL380 G4, Smart Array 6i running Windows 2k3 Small Business Server stopped booting from hard drive
Found it! Somehow Windows Update messed with the IRQ settings. I changed the IRQ assignment of the controller back to 7 and the bootable drive C: was found and Windows loaded.
