Question : Plextor 800A dvd-cdrw drive won't write to a cd...
|

I have a Plextor px-800A dvd super multi drive (e-ide Atapi) plugged into a current Windows XP, svcpk2 system. It installed properly, the drive shows up, no conflict with other drives, it reads and installs from the cd, without a problem, yet it won't write to a cd. The Plextor website states that no additional driver is necessary or available outside of the Windows XP system drivers. When the computer starts up, 'My Computer' shows a "DVD-RAM" text symbol next to the D:\ drive.
When I try to copy a file to the D:\drive, the functionality hits a wall. It gives me an errorD:\ is not accessible, incorrect function. (This is the standard copy/write to disk procedure in Windows XP) And other computers in the office with similar hardware components and operating systems and applications are having no problem writing to the same CD-RW stock of cd's...
I hope this is simple, and I'm just maing a dumb or ignorant mistake...I actually sent back the last dvd cd-rw drive that came with the system, because the system wouldn't write to it but read from it just like this one, thinking there was some defect in the writer component or they had mislabeled the drive, somehow, but I et I was wrong. :-(

I don't right now. But I did install the Easy Media Creator 9 from the disk included with the drive after I encountered the initial resistance from the drive. It asked me to format the disk and it would take about 40 minutes. This seemed unnecessary and odd, becaus of the ability of other similar systems on the network to write to the same disks through Windows XP. But I allowed it anyway...failed after about 10 minutes. So, I uninstalled. I decided to try to solve the problem in the simplest manner first, by trying to get Windows XP to write to it.. before I muddy the waters with program modifications and jumper switches etc. I think I may have some direction here from the Microsoft Knowledge Base. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/316529/ Any comment on my methodology or the issue would be appreciated
