Question : Unable to open Open Office doc files in Word

My client deleted several documents that he created in Open Office 2.1. I undeleted and recovered them to a memory stick. However I cannot read them in either Open Office or Word 2000. If I open them, I get the message about "select the encoding that makes your document readable" in Word and the ASCII filter options in Open Office. Any ideas would be most welcome.
