Question : Backup Exec - Exchange 2007 / Poor Performance and Eventual Exhaustion of RAM Backing up Information Store
|

We have Backup Exec 11d x64 Build 7170 SP2 installed on a Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard x64 SP2. The server is a Dell PowerEdge 1950 with a quad-core Intel EM64T 1.6 GHz CPU, 4 GB of RAM and a 2 TB external array, a locally-attached Dell MD1000. No other applications run on this server - it is a dedicated backup server. We an Exchange 2007 system. The mailbox-role server is a Dell PowerEdge 2950 with a quad-core EM64T Intel 3.0 GHz CPU and 4 GB of RAM. Both servers have 1 Gb NICs. The new backup server is fully up-to-date will all patches in the OS (except I did not install IE 7) and Backup Exec is also fully patched. On the backup server I have also installed SP2 for SQL Server 2005 Express as well as the latest update rollup for VSS. The VSS update is also installed on the mailbox-role server. My problem is in backing up the Information Store with this new server. I have a backup-to-dsk job to fully backup the information store each night. With our previous backup server it backed up very quickly and without any problems. The old backup server is a Dell PowerEdge 750 with two x86 Intel 2.8 GHz CPUs (or perhaps a dul-core) with 1 GB of RAM. It can backup the Information Store to disk at a rate of about 950 MB/min. The new server can manage only about 130 MB/min for about one hour at which point both the backup server and mailbox-role server begin consuming all availalble RAM. The store.exe process on the mailbox server consumes all available RAM on the mailbox server, and the System Cache consumes all available RAM on the backup server. If I fail to stop the job both servers exhaust alll RAM and crash. If I stop the backup job the RAM is released back to the system on the backup server but RAM continues to be consumed at a high rate on the mailbox server. It takes a reboot to stop the memory from being consumed. Since the old backup server running 11d has no problem backing up the mail server I have to conclude the problem is with the new installation of BAckup Exec and is somehow related to VSS. Does anyone have any idea how to fix this problem? We have spend bug bucks to build a dedicated beefy backup server and so far cannot use it to backup Exchange. All other non-VSS backups occur at high speed, both to disk and tape. It is only the information store that is the issue.

I would disable the Chimney per KB Article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/912222/ Netsh int ip set chimney DISABLED
And that should fix the networking I would also make sure you have the latest Broadcom drivers if there are Broadcom nics in the new server
