Absolutely, it can be done. 2000 to XP is a supported upgrade path - except that both operating systems are so old now, there's no support for either.
BEFORE doing the upgrade, the XP Pro CD should have an upgrade adviser type utility. This utility should be able to identify potential issues (like outdated/incompatible drivers and/or software that operates at the hardware level that is not compatible - like CD burning software).
