Question : Vista Ultimate x64 Startup - Failed to Load control SocketXCtl from Socketx.ocx.

On startup I get the following:

DNS
Failed to load control 'SocketXCtl' from SocketX.OCX. Your version of
SocketX.OCX may be outdated. Make sure that you are using the version of
the control that was provided with your application.

I've read this may be the results of malware removal where not everything was removed.  I have run a full scan with windows defender, and there is no DSS type program in either HKEY_CURRENT_USER\..\..\Run or HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\..\..\Run.

Any suggestions on where I can look?  Running Vista Ultimate x64.

Answer : Vista Ultimate x64 Startup - Failed to Load control SocketXCtl from Socketx.ocx.

Sorry, I didn't catch that last bit.

I would download and use Autoruns from Microsoft (free).  This was original built by sysinternals before MS bought them.

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/Utilities/AutoRuns.mspx

It is like MSConfig but on steroids. Plus, it SHOWS EVERYTHING  that is starting with windows not just processes and Services.

There are other tools on the site that are free too.

But it may help with tracking the source of the error. Something is trying to load the DSS somewhere. It may be a variant of the same issue.
