Question : laptop screen appears "letterbox"-style

Hi, Experts

I'm having a weird problem.  Whenever I start up my laptop (a Dell Latitude C840), the screen size reduced is significantly reduced and is surrounding by a really thick black border.  It's sort of like a "letter box" movie.

Otherwise, everything seems to work fine.

I've been fixing it by changing the screen resolution (e.g., from 1024 x 768 pixels to 1280 x 1024 pixels).  That restores the screen to its normal size.

But then it happens again when I reboot.

Other than a recent RAM increase from 512 megs to 1 gig (I added a 512 chip in the empty slot), nothing's been changed.

Any theories?
