Question : A second drive (USB thumb drive?) for page file
|
|
I happened to come across an article today, regarding improving Windows performance. This isn't something I'd usually warrant worth reading, but it presented some interesting suggestions.
It featured a section on the Windows page file, recommending moving it to a second hard drive, so as to keep it separate from the system files.
I figure it would be a waste oif storage space, having a 40+GB HDD, when only <1GB is required. Further more, I imagine using the disk for anything other then the page file, would some what defeat the issue?
This got me thinking, what about using a USB thumb drive for the page file? Is this safe/sensible? I've never had a USB drive connected to a system 24/7, so I assume there will be no problems with constant use...
Any comments/suggestions regarding this and the page file (on a separate drive) in general, are most welcome.

personally, i would not use the usb solution for the reasosns mentioned above. you can use the disk with the page file for other storage; from this page : http://www.theeldergeek.com/locating_the_page_file.htm A step up from placing the paging file on a separate drive is to place it on a dedicated drive. Even if you don't have a drive to dedicate solely to the paging file, placing it on a different drive that contains files which are not accessed frequently will help the performance issue.
