Question : System 10.3.9 DVD-RW
|
|
I have a Mac G5 with a Pioneer DVD-RW DVD-106D drive that came with the G5. The System Profiler says Drive type:CD-RW/DVD-RW. I purchased DVD-RW dvds and cannot burn them from the desktop and Toast acts really funky when inserting a DVD (says there is no disc, creates an icon on the desktop, ejects the dvd, hangs, white recordingetc.) I am using System 10.3.9. My question is this: what can I actually do with this dvd in terms of recording, re-recording and multiple sessions. What is the best software/hardware to accomplish this? Is there a problem with the system that it is not recognizing the discs.

Hi, Marlene.
Can you confirm if you have Toast Titianium version 6.1.1? I believe that is the latest version of Toast 6 and should be what you are using. If not, the upgrade from 6 to 6.1.1 should be free from the Roxio site.
Also, can you tell me what type of G5 you have? Single processor 1.8Ghz? Dual processor? Here is a link to a firmware update that you may or may not have installed. If you do not need it, it should tell you that it isn't required. http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/superdrivefirmwareupdate.html
I'm also going to suggest a few things that shouldn't be too expensive and have done the trick for a few people. It should be known, however, that there are a number of people who have had problems with their superdrives and have eventually turned to an external burner for their needs or have replaced it outright.
-Trying different media. Sometimes a drive is particular about the brand of DVDs you use. Try a brand like Memorex or Verbatim.
-Try a lens cleaner disc. It will be a disc with small brushes on the underside that should delicately try to clean your drive's lens.
Keep me updated.
