A friend of mine has an HP computer that comes with BackWeb by default. It is used for their customer support, allowing them to push down updates and fix the computers of their customers.
Since my friend no longer has a warranty with HP, I am trying to help them remove it. I tried removing it with Add/Remove programs, and that seemed to work...
...But McAfee detected BackWeb when I ran the next scan. I went to remove the c:\HP folder, and all seemed to work.
My friend called me today to let me know that somehow it got re-installed! This is a fresh install of the HP Recovery disks, with McAfee VirusScan (latest definitions.) I also have SpyBot S&D with the latest definitions. They are running Windows ME (it stinks, but they have no other OS to install at the moment.)
There is a major reason why I want to remove it. It opens up a port, that has direct access to the internet. They are on a dial-up, so this is very bad to have an open port! Before I used their restore CD's, there were 20 viruses on their computer (which I think came in over BackWeb.)
Before I used the restore CD's, I booted up one of my Linux Live cd's, and zeroed the hard drive. After I installed the restore CD's, I then installed ZoneAlarm as their firewall, and denied BackWeb access (as only a temporary solution.)
My question for you experts is: HOW DO I REMOVE IT?!?!? lol
Thanks!
