Question : PostgreSQL v Firebird

I'm looking for a combination of cross-platform database and application development GUI to run on Windows to replace VB6/MsAccess. I'm looking at the Firebird and PostgreSQL databases to work with Dabo (dabodev.com). Freeware is prefered and the availability of a good freeware GUI Admin tool for database table creation and viewing of data is important.

The ability to create a smooth Windows installation script is also important, but I guess that's dependant on Dabo.

What combination do you recommend?

The good thing about MsAccess was that it is contained all within one file. The bad thing about VB6 was that there were loads of runtime files and dependancies.

Answer : PostgreSQL v Firebird

Hi, there is an excellent feature comparision for PostgreSQL vs Firebird. I've worked with both in several projects and  personally, I prefer postgreSQL. I think  it's is more flexible, for example it has a lot of functions for working with strings, dates, xml, etc.

For PostgreSQL database administration I use EMS  PostgreSQL Manager, it does the job and there is a limited (but very functional) version for free.
