Question : Moving DNS & WINS from one Windows 2003 server to Another 2003 Server

After I upgrade network to Windows 2003 Server, I am going to promote another W2K3 server (new hardware) to domain controller. I want to then move DNS & WINS from the demoted server to the new DC. I will be keeping the demoted server in the network as a member server.
What is the easiest way to accomplish this? Or if this question has been answered previously, please point me in that direction.

Thanks!!

Answer : Moving DNS & WINS from one Windows 2003 server to Another 2003 Server

1) On the new Windows 2003 server, install the DNS service (Add/Remove- system component)
2) On the new Windows 2003 server, install the WINS service (Add/Remove- System Componet)

Because Windows 2003 default way of installing DNS is to use Active Directory Integrated, I am assuming that this is how it is installed on your network.  With Active Directory Integrated DNS, your DNS database is copied into Active Directory.  Therefore, every Domain Controller has a copy of the DNS database.  Furthermore, this means that your new Windows 2003 server (that was promoted to a domain controller) will also have a copy of the DNS database.  This means that once your install the DNS service, you will have a local copy of the DNS database.  You will not have to do a DNs database migration of any sort.

3) Configure your forwarders in DNS.  On your new Windows 2003 server, go into the DNs console and right click your server name.  Choose Properties from the drop down box.  Click the FORWARDERS tab.  Enter the IP addresses of your ISP DNS server here.  This will enable forwarding to your ISP DNS server and allow for internet DNS resolution.

4) Modify the LOCAL TCP/IP properties of your new Windows 2003 DC.  Point DNS primary to the local IP address of this server.  Also, point WINS primary to the local server IP address.

Before removing the WINS and DNS services from your old Windows server, make sure that you update your client machines so that they point to the new Windows 2003 server for WINS and DNS resolution.  This can be done by modifying the DHCP scope options (if you have a DHCP server) or by making manual edits to each workstation/server.  The goal is to make sure that no other computers are using the WINS/DNS services on the old Windows server.

5) Now you can point your old servers DNS and WINS primary addresses in TCP/IP properties to the NEW Windows 2003 server IP address.

6)  On the old server, Use Add/Remove programs to remove DNS and WINS from the server.

7) On the old server, transfer the FSMO roles to your new server

8) run DCPROMO to remove the role of DC on the old Windows server.
