Question : Internal Modem

Hello all,

Am setting up a PC that may be used externally and therefore needs to be able to connect to the internet through a dial-up modem.

Well, I stuck an old PCI modem into the box. Looking at the card I see the word "Ambient", and a code MD5628D-L-B

Should be sufficient information to find a driver, don't you think?

I found two so far:
From driverguide.com:
ham-win2kxp.exe

From intel:
ham4472win2kxp.exe

When I extract these, in both cases I get 4 files:

IntelH51.cat
IntelH51.inf
IntelH51.sys
migrate.dll

The problem is, what do I actually *do* with those?

I tried right-clicking on the .inf file and choosing install. Doesn't work.

I tried right-clicking on "My Computer", "Manage", going to "Device Manager". It's found a new piece of hardware alright:

Under "Other devices", there's a "PCI Simple Communications Controller" with a big yellow Question Mark beside it. I try updating its driver but even if I point it straight at the folder to which I extracted either of the above, it tells me "Cannot Install This Hardware".

I tried the Control Panel. Under "Printers and Other Devices" I find "Phone and Modem Options". Go to Modems tab and choose Add. Tick "Don't detect my modem, I will select it from a list". On the "Install New Modem" screen I click "Have Disk". I browse to the extract folder. It DOES see the IntelH51.inf file, so I select it and click OK. It then presents me with a list of Models..... which is empty.

I'm obviously doing something fundamentally wrong. But I dont' know what.

Cheers
