Question : Browser failed errors in Event Log. XPPro peer to peer workgroup.
|
|
BACKGROUND: Can't browse network from 4 pc's. I can ping IP's but not UNC's on these 4.
All XPPro SP2 peer to peer workgroup with 6 pc's.
All NIC's configured identically. 192.168.4.X, 255.255.255.0
3 EVENT LOG ENTRIES:
These errors happen on computername SERVER, ip address .4 (static) HP123 is another computer with ip address .33 (DHCP as are the others)
1. (on SERVER) The browser was unable to promote itself to master browser. The computer that currently believes it is the master browser is HP123.
2. (on SERVER) The browser service has failed to retrieve the backup list too many times on transport \Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{C24BFF14-1201-4149-A91C-171148B9EC85}. The backup browser is stopping.
3. (on SERVER) The name "WORKGROUP :1d" could not be registered on the Interface with IP address 192.168.4.4. The machine with the IP address 192.168.4.33 did not allow the name to be claimed by this machine.
QUESTIONS:
1) What happened here? I manage this network but they added a laptop to it when I was away and these issues began at that time. I don't have the laptop available until Monday to attach to the network and check out. But these issues are happening whether it is or it is not connected.
Thanks for the help!

Hallo, The problem may be caused by duplicate name on the network (.33 system) and if you are using static addresses, it may be that you do not have a DNS server or a WINS server configured on the network. If you you do, then you may not have configured the systems with the addresses of the DNS and WINS servers. Have a look at these settings first. Please note that if the "Server" computer is the SBS server, then you need to configure the DNS settings and WINS server to the IP address of the "Server" computer. Regards, M
