i accidently deleted a user and mailbox. i want to recover the mailbox but i am obviously doing some thing wrong. what are the correct steps to do this?

You haven't said what you have done to try and recover the mailbox.
You have to create a user without a mailbox. Then in ESM find the Mailbox Store, right click on it and choose Run Cleanup Agent. The mailbox from the user you deleted will now have a red cross on it. Right click and choose the option to re-attach it and select the user account that you just created.
