Event Type:      Error

Event Category:      Logging/Recovery
Event ID:      494
Date:            6/28/2007
Time:            11:00:02 PM
User:            N/A

Description:
ExchangeServer_ABBEXCHANGE1 (328) ExchangeServer_ABBEXCHANGE1: Database recovery failed with error -1216 because it encountered references to a database, 'N:\EXCHSRVR\ExchangeServer_ABBEXCHANGE1\ExchangeServer_ABBEXCHANGE1.edb', which is no longer present. The database was not brought to a Clean Shutdown state before it was removed (or possibly moved or renamed). The database engine will not permit recovery to complete for this instance until the missing database is re-instated. If the database is truly no longer available and no longer required, procedures for recovering from this error are available in the Microsoft Knowledge Base or by following the "more information" link at the bottom of this message.
I am getting this error on this .edb file, but it is not the actual data store file like the priv1.edb file.  In the above said folder there is no .stm file.  Should there be?  do I do the eseutil /P createstm?  This is a clustered scenario and since I only shut down one at a time, the whole Exchange has never been really rebooted.  Will it fix it if I shut down #2 and reboot #1?  Exchange is working, but froze up last night.  Backups stopped working because of this too.  Help!

Answer : Event 494 on Exchange 2003, server 2003, clustered.

If the databases is mounted. Its a good sign. However, to avoid future corruption or similar issues you can create a new mailboxstore on the same exchange server and move out all mailboxes to this new store. When finsihed, delete the current store and create an empty database this will get a new database file no HASSELS.
You can plan it over the night to move out mailboxes.Users are not impacted. They dont even have to change the outlook profile.Outlook will automatically detect the new mailbox location from active directory.
all the best.!
