Question : .doc files opening blank file after being FTP downloaded

Hi All,

I hope somebody can help me with this - been driving me mad!  Setup is as follows:

Netgear DG834 router with an 8 port switch, 2 machines running XP / Word 2003, 1 machine running Vista/Word 2007.

We have recently installed a D-Link 323 network storage, which all PC's can access and can save files to/open files when needed.

I have forwarded port 21 from our static IP broadband to the lan address of the network storage, thus staff can log in remotely to download whichever files they recoever, using an FTP program called FTP commander.

We can log onto the network drive fine, browse the files, download whichever files we need etc etc....  BUT....

Whenever we download a .doc file (all files are saved in .doc format - even when saved on the Vista machine) the document will 'open' but there is nothing on the screen.  Basically its a blank document, but still with all the properties of the file I should be getting (ie name etc)

Have tried renaming normal.doc to no avail, and have tried to access the files from both a vista and xp machine, with no luck.

Any ideas/suggestions greatly appreciated!

Many thanks

Answer : .doc files opening blank file after being FTP downloaded

Ok.  I wanted to isolate that it is not an upload issue.   I was thinking that the computer uploading the doc files could be corrupting the file.  But this is something rare that it does so only for .doc files.

I have 3 requests to ensure it is not an extention problem:
1. Can you rename an .xls file to .doc and then upload .. then when downloaded to Computer A have it renamed back to .xls and see if it can open it. (you may have to enable "show known file extensions")
2. Reverse "1" by renaming a good .doc to .xls ... then back to .doc after downloading.
3. If you zip the .doc file and upload it, please check if you can open it at Computer A after downloading and unzipping the file.
