Question : Word XP crashes when trying to insert a symbol

This is an XP with SP2 running Word XP with current Norton Anti-virus, MSAntispyware and has been cleaned of spyware threats as best as I can detect.  When I select Insert Symbol the program pops with Word encountered a problem and must close.  There is no error number that I have found.  

I have uninstalled and reinstalled word, but I get the same results.  I have been able to do this in the past, but it was months ago.  I can not put my finger on what might have changed and there is no pattern as to when the error occurs.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried to run the MS Office Update?
Often holes or bugs are fixed in time by Microsoft.
