Question : make bootable dos 6.22 cdrom
|
|
greetings. i have been reading recent and prior posts in this forum about anything that may relate to my situation. On a few occasions, I see that some people have been referred to other sites that have some insight into the cd creation process, but so far
. through my extensive searching high, low and everywhere in-between on the internet, I have yet to find ANY site that gives detailed, step by step instructions on how to create a bootable dos 6.22 installation cdrom.
To work with, I have: - one 6.22 boot disk - three 6.22 setup disks - eight wfw 3.11 setup disks - one tcp/ip for wfw disk - other 3.x applications on disk - EZCD Creator 5 Platinum - Nero Burning Rom
I, so far, have been successful in making windows NT4.0, ME, 2000 and XP bootable discs that work fine. But now, I would like more then anything to be able to consolidate all of these floppies and make one neat, smoothly functional cdrom thats primary function is to boot up and install msdos 6.22. I will place the other applications and the WFW OS on that disc as well but the big obstacle I am facing is that I just cant seem to get this crazy disc made. I have tried making it with both EXCD and Nero and both with variables like 1.44 floppy emulation and without emulation. I have tried everything I can think of and Im telling you
there is really nothing online that gives understandable instruction on how to create this cd. I do keep running into the same site where some guy says he made a batch file that worked great for him and some follow up guy asked him for the file and thats the end of the story. Hell, I even emailed the guy and asked him for the file to end this maddening misery. Of course I received no reply.. not even an auto response from Yahoo telling me the address went deep 6 ages ago or something like that.
Anyhow, please
please, please, please!! If anybody out there reads this and knows how to make this happen, please help me out with this and share the answer. I have all the tools that I need and have a good understanding of what it is that I am doing or so hope to accomplish. However, I do not proclaim to be a know it all and am asking someone with the knowledge and skill in this task for help.
Any help is greatly appreciated beyond measure.
Many sincere thanks, Mindseye73 [email protected]

Thanks for the help! I initially corresponded with mindseye via email, intending to paste the info here when done, but after numerous emails I didn't hear from them again and forgot about it too, but saved a few details... I'll post some of the edited correspondence here (the chronology is unarranged) and maybe some of the included info will be useful to someone in the future as paq. (After digging up the various emails I remember now that there was much writing and shared info on this but didn't hear back from asker regarding resolution. Considering the time involved the points should really be increased, lol...)

I saw your post on Experts Exchange and perhaps I can help... I typically post suggestions or answers in the original thread but to help you I'll probably need to email you some files and since you posted your address I decided to write...
What you want to do should be simple once you get the correct configuration {{{ extraneous crapola snipped here }}} as well as Nero Burning Rom although I'm sure you can handle that part of it after setting up an optimized image...
If you don't receive the help you need from your EE post and don't mind waiting until tomorrow when I have time to compile it I'll send you everything you should need to do it...
We can also correspond within your EE post, as they frown on private communication when the answers should rightfully be posted there. When I offer help involving need of a file or app I usually place it on a server for downloading, but this may be more than that and may be easier to initially help you with it via email...
So feel free to respond to my address here and let me know if you want me to help you with it this way and we'll proceed from there... I'll probably have a few other specific questions to ask you about your current 6.22 configuration and other items.
If you write, please include any other details you can provide about whatever problems you're currently having with the process... Once the problem is solved, I can then paste the relevant information in your EE thread if necessary... So please let me know if there's a chance I can help with it or any other snags and I'll be looking forward to hearing from you...

rin1010,
WOW! I have never received a reply such as yours and i am grateful for your interest and willingness to help me with this project. I am willing to wait for whatever assistance you are gracious enough to offer. I think I was pretty descriptive in my post, but let me just touch on a few items that may help you in your attempt to assist me.
I am new at making my own bootable cd's but so for have had fairly good success at making bootable cdroms for winME, 2000, NT4.0 and XP. I have all of the tools and disks and whatnot to do this project, but for some reason, i just cant seem to get dos 6.22 to boot on the cd's i am making. So far, i managed to make a 6.22 boot cd with the dos install files on it but that's no good because it just wants me to restart my machine to install 6.22 and thus begins the cycle of eternal rebooting. no, i have a 6.22 boot diskette and it will remain a diskette.
I would really like to make a bootable cdrom that contains the setup files for dos 6,.22 and WFW 3.11 so i can install dos 6.22 and then WFW 3.11 on a computer. Like i mentioned earlier, I have everything needed to do this, unfortunately i am lacking in the ability to actually get it done and that is why i have called upon the expertise of someone with more in-depth knowledge in this area and luckily you found me!
i will be waiting patiently for any instructions that you might share and as you mentioned in your initial email... the results SHOULD be made public. I know that there must be others, if few at best, that are having the same trouble as me and keep running into dead ends like i was.
thank you once again for your interest and future efforts in assisting me with this project.
sincerely, mindseye73

i am not sure if i mentioned this in my prior email or not, but if you could just share with me the steps... the process of making this bootable dos 6.22 / WFW 3.11 cdrom, I will be greatly appreciative! Again, I believe I have all of the tools and utilities necessary to undertake this project. Now, I just need the proper procedure and that is what I am asking of you.. the steps to make this happen.

But now, I would like more then anything to be able to consolidate all of these floppies and make one neat, smoothly functional cdrom thats primary function is to boot up and install msdos 6.22. Subj: DOS 6.22 CD, etc... From: RIN 10 10 To: [email protected]

I just got your email but didn't realize it was that urgent... I also received two notifications of a "proposed answer" but nothing is there... another ee glitch I presume... :)
I'm trying to put some info together for you regarding this and will send it to you as soon as possible... {{snip}} I also apologize because I may have misunderstood your original question posted in ExpertsExchange. I thought you needed a configured boot floppy, but after reading your email I see that you want only a method of booting a CD and installing DOS 6.22 ... ?
You said, "i just cant seem to get dos 6.22 to boot on the cd's i am making." and, "So far, i managed to make a 6.22 boot cd with the dos install files on it..."
So now I'm confused about your current status with it all ... Have you successfully created a working DOS 6.22 bootable CD? Is your CD drive an ATAPI/IDE device and are you loading its drivers? What is the primary partition type and can you see that partition after booting?
I'm also attaching a disk image I created of an optimized DOS 6.22 boot disk. If you want to test it, download the executable and run it in Windows ... Put a defect-free 1.44 disk in the floppy drive and it will create a DOS 6.22 boot disk having an optimum configuration...
(The above Boot Disk Image app is available here) : http://users.aol.com/bydesigns/bootdisk/dos622.exe
You can then edit the Config.sys and Autoexec.bat files on the floppy if needed to load specific CDROM drivers or whatever other commands are necessary...
The boot disk will load a very good generic driver for an ATAPI device... It also loads Himem.sys and enables UMB to load devices and drivers High and configures extended memory and loads SmartDrive and a mouse driver, etc... This configuration loads most everything needed, leaving a considerable amount of conventional memory and the disk also contains various helpful tools and utilities, etc...
I don't believe you mentioned if this project is for a new installation and whether you'll first be running Fdisk and Format to prepare a drive... I'll read again your emails and original post and send some more info in a while...

not meaning to seem pushy by any means, but did you say you might have a solution to my dos question?
i received a supposed "answer" to my question in the mail from the forum. i clicked on the designated link and was brought to my original question with NO answer.
if you have decided against involvement, i understand. however, as a courtesy, could you please let me know so i stop checking my mail every 5 minutes waiting for that reply I'm so eager to get? :o)
again, many sincere thanks.

I've attached my self-extracting DOS 6.22 boot disk image application to this email instead of the other because I though you might have download size restrictions or hotmail issues that don't allow files over a certain size or whatever...
This attached file is a little over a megabyte... Let me know if you have problems getting it and if you don't have an alternate method, I'll place it on a server where you can download it if you want to try it ....

i am sorry that i started to become concerned about your reply. i have all of the the mail you mentioned... i just got them and let me tell you... I'm very thankful for your help.
i am going now to read them and follow any instructions you may have included and should i run into trouble or difficulty with the project, i hope you don't mind if i ask your expertise one more, though i promise not to "pester" you with trivial questions.
again, many, many thanks for your concern enough to help.
i am going now to read these emails and try to get the disc created.

Subj: DOS 6.22 Bootable CD -- continued... From: RIN 10 10 To: [email protected]

Mindseye,
I've attached my self-extracting DOS 6.22 boot disk image application to this email instead of the other because I though you might have download size restrictions or hotmail issues that don't allow files over a certain size or whatever...
This attached file is a little over a megabyte... Let me know if you have problems getting it and if you don't have an alternate method, I'll place it on a server where you can download it if you want to try it ....
I've read over your post and emails and have a few comments... You also said, "I would really like to make a bootable cdrom that contains the setup files for dos 6.22 and WFW 3.11 ..." Also that you want to create a CDROM boot disk and its "primary function is to boot up and install msdos 6.22."
DOS 6.22 doesn't really need to be "Setup"... Once installed, all its files reside in one directory... So to set it up you need only to copy the entire DOS directory from an existing installation and burn it to a directory on your boot CD ... You could also expand all the files from the Setup disks to a temporary directory on a hard drive and then subsequently copy that directory to your bootable CDROM disk...
Once you've booted with the CD, you can then copy the entire directory containing the DOS 6.22 files from the CD to the hard drive into a directory named DOS and you'll have the DOS 6.22 installation "setup" ready to run.
For automation, a batch file can be used to run the commands to create a DOS directory on the hard drive and then copy the files from the CD drive to there... Or the appropriate commands can run from Autoexec.bat ...
Of course if you boot to DOS 6.22 (either from a CD or otherwise) you won't be able to see a FAT32 partition and the hard drive will need a FAT16 partition for copying the 6.22 files...
Or you can boot with a Windows 9.x bootable CD having FAT32 support and then copy the DOS directory and necessary files to the hard drive...
Then to boot to a hard drive containing the DOS 6.22 installation, you just need to copy an appropriate Config.sys and Autoexec.bat file to the root directory and specify within each the path and drivers to load...
A batch file can reside on the boot CD having commands to copy the entire DOS directory from the CD to the hard drive and also to copy the new Config.sys and Autoexec.bat files and whatever other files or apps you want to copy and run.
Whether you copy the files manually or with a batch file, once copied to the hard drive, along with the appropriate Config.sys and Autoexec.bat startup files, you're done... The system should now boot successfully to ver. 6.22 ...
So let me know if I understand correctly and you're currently able to boot to DOS 6.22 with a boot CD emulating the A: drive while loading your CDROM device drivers to see it as well as accessing the C: hard drive...
If you're having a problem with that part of the project, it could be that your BIOS isn't correctly supporting CDROM boot to work with the way your app is creating the DOS 6.22 bootable CD...
If the problem is merely how to install DOS 6.22 in this manner, then just burn a copy of an entire DOS directory onto the boot CD, then boot and copy it to a directory named DOS on the hard drive, then transfer already configured Config.sys and Autoexec.bat copies to the hard drive's root and when you reboot DOS 6.22 will be installed. And btw... Windows for Workgroups can be done essentially the same...
So let me know if this is correct about what the exact problem is and if not, include exactly what occurs and whatever error messages you may be getting or if you need specific settings for a boot CD in Nero ...
Hope this info is legible but please mention if it's unclear and indicate whether you need more about creating a DOS directory to burn, or the comprised files or recommended DOS 6.22 configuration for Config.sys and Autoexec.bat ...

Mindseye,
You said, "...follow any instructions you may have included and should i run into trouble or difficulty with the project, i hope you don't mind if i ask your expertise one more, though i promise not to "pester" you with trivial questions."
I may not have included any specific helpful instructions for you but I hope it's sensible enough to generate some feedback on it about whether I was clear on the 6.22 Setup.
And I absolutely don't mind if you ask other specific questions and I don't consider anything trivial and i'm glad to try to help.
Since the entirety of DOS 6.22 is contained in one directory, there are many ways it can be "setup" or "installed"... Once all the files are expanded from the disks and reside in one directory, the directory can be copied to a bootable disk and DOS 6.22 will run...
The files could also be zipped and then the archive can be unzipped to the desired location, and so on...
One of the most important things when booting and running DOS 6.22 is the system's configuration in Config.sys and Autoexec.bat ... Doing a setup this way, predefined copies of these two files can be copied to the root directory having the 6.22 OS and the system will be ready to boot ...
You can look at the Config.sys and Autoexec.bat files on the boot disk I sent you to get an idea of what I consider a good setup...
Of course, certain modifications may be needed to include device specific CD drivers, etc., and the paths will need to be added to load the devices and drivers from the C:\DOS directory...
I'll provide edited recommended versions of these two files if you want, which will configure the system's memory in the best possible manner and that will definitely beat MemMaker and avoid having it write to and mess up these startup files, etc... So let me know how it's going and what I can do to help...
