Question : my documents folder vanished after slaving xp laptop drive onto vista desktop during upgrade

hi

i've got a bit of a problem here, the boss wanted me to upgrade the hard disk in his laptop rather than just buying a new one, new disk is in, and xp is up and running, all i had left to do waas move documents / emails onto the new disk

i thaught the best way to do this since it was a sata drive was just to slave it onto my desktop pc and copy the stuff over the network

first thing that happened was it popped up a message saying the recycle bin on the slaved drive was corrupt and did i want to delete it (picked no)

after that i kept getting access denyed messages whenever i tryed to copy stuff, so i took ownership of the drive and set it to allow everyone / annon logon rights, which with the exception of 1 file in the ie5.cache folder is letting me copy stuff without issue now

the only problem is the my documents folder seams to have vanished completely

i've turned on show hidden folders without any real joy, the odd bit is
if i pick property's on the username in documents and settings it comes back saying that its size is 14.7 gb
but after going through and just adding up the sizes of all the listed folders i can only account for approx 5 gigs worth of stuff (about right as there shoiuld be approx 10gb of docs)

any help would be much appriciated

Well you know for next time that you should copy stuff off the disk before taking it out of the computer, as security and rights to files are getting more and more tight and complicated...
But that doesn't help you right now... So I'd start with a program called Treesize (http://www.jam-software.com/treesize/)  which will show you what's taking up the space on the drive. If you still can't find the documents, you might need some disk/file recovery s/w. Post back after trying Treesize for some suggestions...
