Question : Windows Update stalls - SVCHOST.EXE using high CPU

I am having problems with my Windows Update service and svchost.exe.  Whenever I try to peform a Windows Update, it takes me to the appropriate site then checks for the latest version of the software.  After I click on the "Install Now" button to get this software, it gets to 100% then stops.  It will sit there for hours with no activity.  If I have a look in Task Manager, the svchost.exe is usually taking up a very large proportion of the CPU time.

I had a look at the Experts Exchange solution that seemed to apply to me:

http://www.experts-exchange.com/OS/Microsoft_Operating_Systems/Q_22531711.html

I did all of the steps that Mr_Husy suggested, but the problem still existed.  I then found the following on the Microsoft website:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927891/

I downloaded both patches suggested in this article, and ran the first.  This worked without any problems.  When I ran the second, however (in step 2), after I clicked on "I Agree" and the system went ahead to try and apply the patch, the progress window was displayed but nothing happened.  The "Next", "Back" and "Cancel" buttons are all greyed out and the progress bat does not move at all (it doesn't even start for that matter.

I tried running both these patches under safe mode as well but the second froze in the same way.

Can anybody give me some help as to how I might be able to fix this problem?

Thanks!
