Question : How to troubleshoot slow networks - Windows environment

I am just looking for some guidance here.

We get a lot of clients just complaining about slow networks - now I know there are lots of possible causes - we normally start at the server and then at the individual pc's.

We have a client now who has an issue and is adamant it is not his servers (of which he plays a lot). He says just at certain times of the day network is slow - email / web browsing / file access etc.

We have looked at the servers and they look ok nothing too obvious.

What steps or approach do other people take to troubleshooting these types of problems - What tools do people use / and does anybody know of good resources on the web to assist with this type of thing.

Any help would be good here - I would prefer not very basic and obvious answers here such as check RAM. What I am looking for is from other field engineers / sys admins how they would tackle this type of problem.

Thanks

Hi,

To diagnose network related issues, most recommended tool is Wireshark which Intercepts all the network traffic and decodes it. You can run wireshark on the server and check for broadcasts and other unknown traffic on the server.

If you are new to wireshark, then;
