Question : Questions about hiring a graphics artist to make a company logo/letterhead

As the title suggests, I need a logo image for my new company which will be used on the website, business cards, etc.  I have a decent amount of Photoshop skills, but I'm just not artistically creative enough to do it myself.  I don't even have the slightest idea in mind about what it should look like.  As we all know, it isn't necessarily important if *I* like it--what's important is that it appeals to the customers' tastes.  I don't really care if it's extremely flashy, or merely simple yet memorable/identifiable. All that matters is that it adds a positive appeal. (In this case, it will be for a web-design/media company, so the graphic is relatively important).

So my question is, what sort of an agreement should I set up with the graphics artist such that the terms are fair for the both of us (read: fair for me :).  As I said, it isn't necessarily important if *I* like the finished product, but sometimes you just know when something will or will not work.  Do most free-lance artists-for-hire have a take it or leave it policy? I'm sure they would always do minor tweaking, but what concerns me is if I say "Oh, that's complete garbage."  So then what?

I was on a free-lance marketplace website where you can view the portfolios of many artists, but I wasn't impressed by any of them. Not because they didn't have talent, but because the graphics just weren't designed for my type of business.

If I want some type of "guarantee" from the artist that he doesn't get paid until I am satisfied, should I expect to pay a massive premium for such a service? If so, how much more would that run me?

Thanks,
Brian

Brian -

I suggest you use Elance. I have used graphic artists there and they are inexpensive and they are bound by the rules of Elance so there is no need for a separate agreement.

The big advantage of this market place is you can have a lengthy exchange with many graphic artist without any commitment and work towards exactly what you want.

The procedure is that you post your job and many graphics artists will bid for it.  You can see their portfolios and get an idea of their range of style. Many of them will provide 'mock ups' at this stage for your perusal. When you have found one whose work and basic ideas you like at a price you want to pay you give them the job.  You only pay if they come up with the results.

It's just the right place for someone with the requirements you describe.
