Question : How do I keep a users profile when moving from a domain to a workgroup
|
|
I have an NT 4.0 network running in a domain with all PC's running XP Pro SP2. I am shutting down this domain and connecting users to a Windows 2003 server via workgroup (peer to peer). - I have already created all the user accounts on this server. - plan to move PC's out of the doamin into a workgroup
I want to keep most of their settings such as the ability to continue to use specific applications that were installed using their profile (applications that were not installed under "all users" profile). I believe I can perform this by going to My Computer > Rt-Click, Properties > "Advanced" tab > User profiles settings. Here you can perform a copy. How and where do I copy the profile?

You would have to do a lot of SID hacks to use the SID rerouting method. This is because when you join a domain, Account RID's are added to the Domain SID... NOT the local SID. For that reason, I think you would be better off using the profile copy tool. Here's how to do it:
1) Log on to the computer with the domain Account 2) Reboot 3) Log on with a third account (not the local user account OR domain user account) that has Administrator privileges 4) Use the copy profile tool to copy the profile into the newly created directory in "Documents and Settings". Make sure to set the Domain Account under "Permission to Use".
