Question : WebTrends tracking - 301 redirect in IIS environment - Want to track 301 redirected domain visits
Environment: Using WebTrends 7 Enterprise - IIS .NET netframe environment
Situation:
- We have a new domain that 301 redirects at the IIS server level to our current domain.
- We have links to the NEWdomain.xxx being posted on external websites, and I want to track visits to our new domain that is redirecting to our current domain CURRENTdomain.xxx.
- Because of the 301 redirect, I believe WebTrends IS indeed currently tracking the additional visits from NEWdomain.xxx but the problem is I can't report on visits from NEWdomain.xxx only because I believe it's dumping the additional visits into the "Direct Traffic" 'bucket'
Is there a configuration I can set in either WebTrends, or config on the 301 IIS server level so that I can track visits from our new domain to our current domain? I specifically want to see NEWdomain.xxx numbers in the Marketing > Referring Site tab of the WT Reporting Console in our WT profile set up for our CURRENTdomain.xxx.
Thanks for your help!!
Answer : WebTrends tracking - 301 redirect in IIS environment - Want to track 301 redirected domain visits
In IIS, make sure all options are enabled for logging on all sites. Microsoft's defaults for logging are horrible and result in a slim log file.
- How is redirection configured? Are you using the redirect to another site option or coding the redirects? (shouldn't make a difference, but curious)
In the CurrentDomain.xxx's raw http log there should be referrer field entries containing the URL of the page that does the redirect. Nothing should have to be done to Webtrends is you are using the defaults in the report.
- Are there any Hit or Visit Filters in place?
- Do you filter out any IP address(es)?
