Question : Missing DLL and SYSTEM.INI glitch.
|
|
My IE4 does not work and this is affecting many other programs. I have a missing SHLWAPI.DLL, among other problems. I read an answer to a previous question indicating that in this case one should "remove network options, reboot. Install a minimum of TCP/IP and net adapter..." (posted by stone5150 in answer to mike96007) This is all Greek to me. Kindly explain exactly how I would go about doing this. If anyone has any other suggestions they too would be most welcome.
I also have a problem with my SYSTEM.INI related to a missing device driver. C:/dos/vfintd.386 this is what I am told every time I start my computer.
S.O.S.
P.S.- What's a DLL? P.P.S.- Can you recommend a good crash protector/utility program that would help me avoid these problems in the future?

Are you on a Network, Lan? Right Click on My Computer and list here What it says under System.
Upgrade to IE5.0 its free, will solve your problems in one fell swoop.
Or; You do have IE4.0 on CD or on your disk, right? Open My Computer, Control Panel, Add/Remove programs,
Scroll down until you find Microsoft Internet Explorer and select Uninstall. After this is finished, If you live through this and don't die of old Age; Reinstall IE.40. After this is finished and your are no doubt older than Moses by now.
Your other errors - For one the SHLWAPI.DLL error should be eliminated.
Or you can extract the SHLWAPI.DLL from the following cabinet file, Ie4nt_3.cab to do so type the following command at a command prompt, and then press ENTER
extract ie4nt_s.cab /e
where is the number of the cabinet file you want to extract.
Or you can do it the easy no DOS way by downloading this; Windows 95 Power Toys Set from; http://www.microsoft.com/windows95/downloads/contents/wutoys/w95pwrtoysset/default.asp?site=95 Now follow the instructions exactly, read before you download, and now you can work with view and extract cab files from within Windows.
Any TCP/IP problems should be addressed as follows; Download to your Disk to a location that you can remember the following;
NETWORKING Dial Up Networking 1.3 Performance & Security Update Provides additional features for Microsoft® Windows® 95 Dial-Up Networking, which improve performance, reliability, and security
http://www.microsoft.com/windows95/downloads/contents/wurecommended/s_wunetworking/dun13win95/default.asp?site=95
Now Open My Computer, Control Panel, Add/Remove programs/Windows setup/Communications, Uninstall TCP/IP. Do not reboot yet. Reinstall TCP/IP. Now reboot. Now install the DUN 1.3 update. Reboot if necessary.
vfintd.386

Move the largest, most recent file to \Windows\System and rename the other files found. Rename by Right click select rename, vfintd.123, vfintd.124 etc, . There should only be one that is not renamed and that one is the latest dated largest file that you moved to Windows System folder.
Reboot.
Short for Dynamic Link Library, a library of executable functions or data that can be used by a Windows application. Typically, a DLL provides one or more particular functions and a program accesses the functions by creating either a static or dynamic link to the DLL. A static link remains constant during program execution while a dynamic link is created by the program as needed. DLLs can also contain just data. DLL files usually end with the extension .dll, .exe., drv, or .fon.
A DLL can be used by several applications at the same time. Some DLLs are provided with the Windows operating system and available for any Windows application. Other DLLs are written for a particular application and are loaded with the application.
