Question : Printing Hangs from Multiple Applications

I have a system that has multiple printers installed. When I try to print from multiple programs, Notepad, Acrobat, Word etc... the application just hangs. Have tried changing default printer, and the problem continues.

the situation to be more exact is as follows.
windows xp sp2
multi networked environment with 192.168.0 ,.1 and .5 networks
we think that issue might be related to a lack of connectivity to the .5 network so we are building a VPN tunnel to that network and will see what happens.
many printers from different vendors all networked some fax and scanner as well.
