Question : Exchange Recovery
I have a SBS 2003 Server with Exchange. The server totally crash. Main Board issue and I need to restore my Exchange on a complete different PC. Since I only have limited backup I don't think the full recovery is possible. What can I do to avoid having this problem again? What is out there to best provide a disaster recovery for my Exchange?

First of all, buy a product like Symantec Backup Exec with IDR option (Intelligent Disaster Recovery) so you can boot from floppy, cd and finally restore the complete server from the IDR tape. Within a few hours (concerning the amount of data) your new server will be up and running. You can eventually also choose to buy the exact same server twice and do a restore on the clone server. Most of the time Symantec claims that the hardware doesn't have to be the same but we had some major problems with IDR putting back on different chipsets of other HP machines. At this time we do it for one of our clients and IDR works just fine. The have 200Gb of data and we do a full restore of the IDR tape within 3 hours. I must say...the tape drive is a Tandberg LTO2. Take your hard- and software in consideration. Pay a bit more now, so you can rely on quality stuff when you need to take action on the problem at hand. Consider extra maintenance and support on site. See also:
