Question : Paypal - custom pass thru / through variables - More the just "Custom" - how?

Please please help.

I'm creating  a cusotmer paypal shopping cart. However I seem to have great difficulty in working out how I can get paypal to pass back quite a few differnt fields of custom data. I want some pass-thri variables.

Now I know paypal provides the "Custom" field, but this is limited to 200 characters. I need to pass through a lot more then that.

When I had previosluy impolemented a Worldpay solution I was able to have as many variables passed through as I choose. The way they were named identified them as variables that needed to be passed back. But I Cannot find any such thing in Paypal.

PLease help!
