Question : ActiveX & Java apps suddenly not working in IE7! Also, Media Player won't run.

We have a laptop that it seems suddenly will not run apps/pop up windows, etc...on any websites. The websites themselves will load okay, but things like Internet radio and the like will not come up.
I can't find any thing wrong with IE7's settings for Java or ActiveX and I've turned off firewalls, anti-spyware, etc...but still no luck. Then I discovered that Windows Media Player will not start up either. Virus scan has turned up nothing.
HELP!!!
