Question : Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock<wbr />' (111)

When trying to start the mysql server I get the following error:
Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/lib/mysql/mysql.sock' (111)

the /var/log/mysql.log file contains the following message:
can't find 'host.frm'

what could be the problem?
