Question : Need to fix this and retrieve files, photos in particular,

I have a dual boot system with both windows and ubunto, all was well until it started stating it had a problem loading grub 1.5, after that, the problem loading grub message would only appear for a few seconds, it would present the list of OS's to boot from, minus the windows xp recovery mode option, I'd select the windows xp option which would start loading and then would enter the dreaded blue screen with the following error message  stop: c000021 {Fatal System Error} The Windows Logon Process system process terminated unexpectedly with a ststus of 0xc0000034 (0x00000000 0x00000000). The system has been shut down.
 I then booted from the cd entered the recovery mode and ran the FIXMBR command.Now it doesn't show me the list of OS's to boot from but goes straight to booting windows which leads to the same blue screen error message.I need to fix this with the priority being to retrive some files, photos in particular, I had on windows.
  Please please help I'm a lost novice

I would stop everything you are doing.  If you are trying to salvage your data, then I would recommend you use a program like http://www.accessdata.com/forensictoolkit.html or http://www.digitalintelligence.com/software/accessdata/forensictoolkit2/

With these applications, you can recover pictures, documents, emails etc.  It will take a while to process the entire drive but this will make it possible for you to salvage these with a minimum amount of loss.

Another option is to get another hard drive, load this up in your system as your boot drive and load it with what ever OS you want.  While making your original hard drive available to read.
