Question : Replace Existing File Server with new DFS servers

We are running out of space on our primary file server, and would like to find a better solution.  Since we have multiple sites and multiple file servers, we are looking at consolidating this into a DFS solution with new servers at each location (therfore with more storage in each) and setting them up in a DFS replication system.  However, just moving the data and setting up new shares is not good because of all the existing shortcuts and so forth that will break.  Does anyone have a concept that will allow me to somehow redirect anyones requests to the new DFS share structure.

In other words, i want users whose shortcuts now point to \\oldserver\sharename, to not have to change and redirect them to \\dfsroot\samesharename

In all we will be replacing 4 file servers, into one large DFS share system, so we would want to provide "redirection" for those other 3 as well, but they are smaller sites, and not as much a concern as the primary site.

My other thought would be to forgo the DFS, and setup a pair of clustered servers that we would rename as the old servers name so that there is no real redirection needed, but this is not my preferred option.

You should take a look at the Microsoft File Server Migration Tool.  I believe this is probably your best (if not your only) tool for this job.  It will do not only regular file server enviroments, but also DFS namespaces.
