Question : Dell Inspiron 8600 NEC DVD+RW ND-5100A wont read DVD

This DVD/CD Rom drive wont read any regular dvds. I put an audio cd in and I can see the audio cd. If I put in a cd for instance I put in Windows XP Professional disc and it wont read it. I open My Computer and open the drive and the folder is blank! I have tried this with many DVD movies and regular cd's. My conclusion is that I need a new drive??? I even tried to boot it to windows xp pro and nothing!

if you can't boot to xp pro cd or boot from 98 startup disk with cd rom support and pull a directory of the drive the drive is most likely ruined or there is a short in the cable.
