Question : Windows Mobile Device Center, windows mobile 6 cell phone, transferring contacts from a cell phone that does not have an active account or sim card

I have a cell phone that has had the sim card removed.  the account (phone number) for the cell phone is no longer active.  the cell phone service was provided by the user's previous employer.

The user has all of her contacts on the cell phone and neglected to extract them from Outlook at her old job when she had the chance.  they are on the cell phone in Outlook.

I have exchange 2007, outlook 2007, etc.  I can see the cell phone on a PC when connected by USB.  how can I get the contacts off the cell phone.

i tried to work with the phone using Windows Mobile Device Center in Vista.  However, under 'change exchange server settings" the text boxes for username and domain are disabled.  I can change the exchange server name and the user password, but not the username and domain.  i can certainly set up a temporary account with the username, but am stuck with the domain name problem.

So a related question is how to get the Mobile Device Center to let me change the exchange server settings on the device, or how to change them on the device.  they are all disabled on the device, or rather the only ActiveSync menu option that is active is the STATUS option.

Thanks for the URL, however it is  not applicable.

After speaking with AT&T technical support, here is the answer:

the previous employer had locked the cell phone to their server settings.  According to AT&T there is no way to unlock the settings.  The phone is manufactured by HTC, and according to them, contacts can be saved by:
1) copying the contacts (in a file named PIM in the MY DEVICE folder) to a SIM card.  do not copy to a PC via USB or this will "destroy" the PIM file.
2) delete the existing activesync account
3) set up a new activesync account
4) copy the contacts back onto the phone from the SIM card.

I have not tried this yet, but will post the result when I do.
