Question : annoying 'not connected' error message, dial up connection pop-ups, when i am connected via wireless network

I'm using Win xp, connecting to the internet via home wireless network.

I have a dial up network set up under control panel/network connections, that stays disconnected.  I only use it when I am traveling and need to use dial up.

Here's the problem:  when I'm at home and connected via wireless... if for some reason IE doesn't connect to a website right away (it's down, or slow, or even if an image or advertisement on a page fetches a file from that page and can't do it right away for some reason)... my Internet Explorer just's to 'working offline' mode and ask's if I want to connect, and it trys to use the dial up connection to connect.

I then end up in a fight with Internet Explorer trying to convince it I really am online (I can fetch email just fine during this time).  Sometimes when I uncheck the 'work offline' under 'tools', it just changes back as soon as I try to fetch a webpage.  Othertimes it will pull up the page but then changes back to 'work offline' mode right away, or as soon as I try to get to another page.  Then up comes the dial up connection pop-up again, do you want to connect?  If I say yes, it gives me the dial up connection, if I say no it stays in 'work offline' mode, and if I cancel it out or closes it stays in 'work offline'.  Usually after unchecking 'work offline' several times, it will stick for a little while... but the very next time a page it a bit slow to load - bang - back to having the some trouble again.

I can delete the dial up connection.  Then everything works fine and I don't have this trouble at all.  But I need that dial up connection and the numbers I have saved in it for when I travel.

What's the solution to this irratating, time wasteing problem?

Thanks,      Chris

PS: arrghh, just before submitting this, I tried to spellcheck from the google toolbar, up comes the 'dial up connection' box.  I went back, unchecked the 'work offline', tried again, same thing.  Going to uncheck the 'work offline' again and try to submit this question.

Nope, none of the links will work.  Even though I have 'work offline' unchecked.  (it rechecks itself).  Now what I will have to do is try reloading this page, uncheck again and try several more times, it will eventually go through.

OK, back online.  Had to close IE, check mail (I use eudora), open IE back up, and now it agrees I am online (first time I opened it before checking mail it still insisted I was offline).

Reminder, this only happens when I have a dial up connection set up.  If I deleted it, everything is fine, but I need it for use when traveling....

Answer : annoying 'not connected' error message, dial up connection pop-ups, when i am connected via wireless network

IE>Tools>Options>Connections> and select Never Dial a connection, or at least the middle option, "Dial whenever a network connection is not present....

IE will find the LAN then, with no problem...

This usually happens if you accidentally set the DUN connection as a default...
