Question : AIX 5.2 install / updating to latest maint level

I need to update an install of AIX oslevel 5.2.0.0 to the latest which I think is 5.2.0.7.  The machine is a 7026.
For the install, do I need to install the remaining components from volumes other than Volume 1 in order to successfully upgrade to latest maint level?

I tried installing the remaining software from volumes 1-6 and most were successful except for some that failed...

The question is - is volume 1 adequate to installe the base operating system and also apply the maintenance patches?

Answer : AIX 5.2 install / updating to latest maint level

The reason for the original problem you saw is that there are no fixes to bos.rte.install in the "volume 2" tar - it is in the "volume 1" tar. So running "installp -acgXd /usr/sys/inst.images/520007/520007_v2 bos.rte.install" will not find anything to install.

It is more efficient to un-tar both volumes to the same directory and then install from that. However, you cannot do damage by not doing so. In this case, as gheist says, you have installed the new bos.rte.install successfully but that would happen anyway. What you will find is that MLs which change bos.rte.install will install that first and then begin a second pass to install all the other fixes.

You can now run "smitty update_all" with "preview only" and see what else will happen. After you have completed "smitty update_all" for real, you should see the correct "oslevel" results.
