Question : Can I link to a local drive or program from Sharepoint 2007?

Hi,

My managers asked me to put a link on our Sharepoint home page to a program that is installed locally on their machines; the idea is, if they have it installed, when they click the link, it will open it for them (and save them searching their desktop for the shortcut)... if someone doesn't have access/have it installed, it will do nothing or fail.  I don't really think there's a way to do it, but I've given it my best effort, trying whatever I could devise that might possibly work; obviously the Links lists are for URLs, and if you upload the executable, it's not really linking back to their computer, so it's missing all of the supporting files.  I just want an expert opinion (so to speak :) on whether there is a way to do this.  Even if I were (hypothetically) able to create a link to Program Files, it would probably go to the location at the server, right?  So it still wouldn't work.

Thanks!

You can if the location of the program file is the same on everyone's computer.  You can create a batch file to run it, upload the batch file to the sharepoint site and put a link to the batch file wherever you want the link.  (i.e. "c:\program files\program.exe")
