Question : Relay permissions on local subnet Exchange 2007

I'm trying to allow some scanners on our LAN to relay through our Exchange 2007 server's SMTP.  We previously had this working just fine before we upgraded.   I've created a new receive connector that includes our local subnet as described in the article below.  I've also set the permission for the anonymous user using the cmdlet, but I still can't relay.  I of course do not want to make a mistake that would allow an open relay.  Any suggestions?

I've tried testing SMTP from the command line using a machine on the LAN and I'm getting the following error.
530 5.7.1 Client was not authenticated
