Question : WinXP won't boot after Norton restore

Restoring Norton Ghost partition images from either backup versions using 12 or 14 shows the described STOP on reboot almost immediately after WinXP start screen displays.  There is no difference in behavior when using either version of Ghost.  
I have Dell Inspiron 1525 - dual boot Vista / XP.  I can install XP no problem, but am looking for a restore solution so I don't have to reinstall all software, etc.
Typically I'm capable of finding solutions - this has kicked my butt for over a week.

just to add : it does boot, since you have the Windows display
the 7b error indicates driver problems -  is the image from the same system?  if not, that is the cause
