Question : G5 Problems...

We are running a G5 OS 10.5.2 as one of our servers. It has a dual 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon processor, with 4 GB 800 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM memory, 1.6 GHz bus speed and a 300 GB HD. This morning I got an email alert saying that the backup on the Verbatim external HD had failed. I went back and checked it and opened the back up HD (whose icon happened to have changed color from yellow to green) and it showed nothing at all in it. I tried to re-start with TechTool Pro and with DiskWarrior, but the computer would never come up. It just kept restarting itself over and over - never getting to the log in screen. I took the CD's out and disconnected the external backup drive and restarted and the computer came up fine. I plugged the external drive into another server and it showed backups so I immediately backup up the back up drive on another server (just in case). : ) Then I plugged the backup drive back into the original server and restarted the server. It came up fine and showed the external drive with my backup on it. The backup drive icon was back to the original color of yellow. (Strange...) Our editor had been getting error messages this morning saying the server had gone into hibernation. (Strange again...) lolol As I was trying to check things out I kept getting messages that the Finder wasn't responding. Anyway, I am mortified that this G5 might be going down. I ran disk utility and it said the drive was fine, but that's not always a guarantee. I have also had another G5 go nuts and Apple couldn't fix it and of course it was out of warranty. Do you have any idea of what might could be happening or what I might could do to be on the offense here instead of the defense with this computer? Thanks a bunch!!!

Answer : G5 Problems...

sounds like your TTP and DW disks are not compatible with that G5. what version of TTP and DW are you trying to use on this machine? there are very few old versions of either one that will work on your new intel G5.
also, from your log file the Verbatim drive is failing.
To make sure your G5 is not too upset about accessing that failing drive so often: Start up your G5 holding the shift key down until you see the login screen. YOu should see SAFE MODE on the top of the window. Log in and goto your utiilities folder and run Disk Utility, repair permissions and then verify the disk. if either one comes up with errors you need to invest in a new copy of TTP5. or
If you have the system (grey) disks that came with the machine. Start up with the 1st disk in the machine and hold the option key down. you should see both your HD/OS and DVD/OS and be able to select the DVD install disk. If this is your first time doing this, it will appear that you are trying install the os again. this is normal, get past the keyboard language selection and then go to the utilities within the menu, you should see disk utility. Run the disk repair first and repair permissions twice after that. Quit out of everything and allow your machine to restart. This should make your machine really happy. hope this helps.
