Question : Unable to boot windows after Disk Copy
|
|
I have tried a few times to copy/upgrade my entire drive to a larger drive.using Nortong Ghost 9.0 I have done some multiple times (disc to disc) and it makes it to the blue windows screen when it just stops. After doing some reserach, I have found that the problem lies with the [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices] key in the registry.(holding the values for the original C, and the new copied d:) Is it possible to remove these items in the registry just prior to doing the drive copy?
I need to MAKE SURE that windows will rebuild these with the reboot (wheter new or old drive). I just want to be sure before I delete it and cannot access my files at all...

Follow these three steps, which will clear the registry BEFORE making your Ghost 9 copy-clone:
1. Make sure your new hard drive is new/unusued/blank/unformatted. If it has been used by Windows XP previously, XP will remember the drive letter and DiskID signature, which causes all kinds of havoc.
Use Method #3 to clear the DiskID field if you have a floppy drive. http://www.goodells.net/multiboot/partsigs.htm

Or, use this free disk-wipe utility http://terabyteunlimited.com/copywipe.php
2. XP uses a DiskID drive signature to remember the drive letter last used. The easiest way to clear up problems with "reserved" drive letters that sometimes cause conflits is the delete the data values from this registry key: Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\MountedDevices Delete the \DosDevices\G: values such as this \DosDevices\H: values such as this \DosDevices\I: values such as this and then reboot. XP should not be locked into the \DosDevices\ list and will reassign drive letters normally. If you had given any hard drive, cd/dvd drives their own "hard-coded" drive letters using Disk Management, then reassign them again. 3. Use Ghost 9. Read the "Copying Drives" chapter, and options "copy mbr" "set drive active" and any other options that apply to you.
