Question : Configuring onboard audio in Linux

I am trying to get sound to work on my PC with Red Hat's Fedora Core 2. This is the 2.6.5-1.358 kernel. I get a "no souncard detected " error message during boot. I have an ASUS PTGD-LA (Goldfish 3) motherboard with onboard audio. This PC came originally with Windows XP and has the Realtek ALC880 High Definition Audio CODEC chipset.
The computer now has a dual boot configuration with Fedora Core 2 installed as a second OS. The sound works fine with Windows, but is currently non-existent in Fedora. I know I need Linux sound drivers to work with this chipset and I have them downloaded. Now how do I get them to work with ALSA

Anyway, what is the reason you are using such an old version of fedora-core? Newer versions will most likely have that sound module included and then you wouldn't have to build the new driver. Current is fedora-core 9.
