Question : XP fails to boot up with a secondary external usb drive

I am trying to install a second hard drive ( External USB), on a XP  pro desk top. It installs properly and works fine . However when I re-boot, the systems hangs. Windows does not start up. If I unplug the ext drive, windows boots up fine. If I plug back the Ext drive the drive works fine. My problem is the drive works fine if I switch it off before windows boots up. The ext drive is a Buffalo drive station combo.
