Question : Using XP Home "you might not have permission to use this network resource"
|
|
I have spent hours reading the other answers and I still can't get it ( one significant link no longer works ).
Satellite modem connected to Linksys WRT54G with desktop wired in directly and laptop via wireless. Both computers using Windows XP Home, SP2 with CA security suite (firewall off), same user name on each with no password. Netbios over TCP/IP on both. Both can ping each other. Same workgroup name.
Under My Network Places: On the lap the desk's SharedDocs does not show. On the desk the lap's SharedDocs shows but the computer is listed as 'unknown'. Clicking here on the lap's SharedDocs give the dreaded 'You might not have permission'.
What next?

Answer : Using XP Home "you might not have permission to use this network resource"

Because I know how easy it is to forget the actual question (I do it all the time) - I'll remind everyone (myself included) :o) that we have a permissions/accounts issue mainly - pinging each computer works. Microsoft wouldn't put "(Recommended)" next to the SFS in XP if it didn't work - so we should be able to get around that. You will still want to get the Security tab appearing in XP Home however - so continue with those other suggestions in the earlier posts and just do what you can - and let us know what happens.
