Question : restored old Exchange mailbox from tape, message body missing, but sender and subject show, BackupExec 12 on SBS 2003

I have a Small Business 2003 Server.  I have Backup Exec 12 for SBS on this server.  Each night, I back up to DLT tape.  In the backup job I created, under selections, I put a full check on "first storage group."  Jobs pretty much always complete successfully.

A user left in early March.  We think she deleted a bunch of email before she left.  As such, I want to restore from our oldest tape (Feb 25).

I created an all new user with a blank mailbox.

When I create a new restore job, under selections, I see each mailbox on the server, and I put a check next to  the user I want to restore.  Under Microsoft Exchange Redirection, I tell it to redirect mailbox sets and I tell it to "restore to mailbox" and I put in the name of the blank mailbox I created.

The restore succeeds, but for more 80% of the messages, the body of the email is missing.  I only have the sender and the subject of the message.  I have verified this by going into webmail for the newly created mailbox and opening Outlook attached to the mailbox in question.

I'm looking for any ideas on what I might be missing.  Is there any way to restore this to a PST file or some other means?  Or could I restore all the mailboxes in the recovery storage group?  Then I could exmerge this mailbox out.

I appreciate any help anyone can provide.

Thank you

Answer : restored old Exchange mailbox from tape, message body missing, but sender and subject show, BackupExec 12 on SBS 2003

This could be a GRT bug. You could try to duplicate the data from tape to a B2D device and then restore from the backup on the B2D device.

Or try to restore the full database to the Recovery Storage Group (RSG). http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/264815.htm. That will always give you the correct results.
