Question : URGENT! Remote Desktop;Terminal Services;2000 Server;too many connections, no access to local machine
I have no access (for at least a week) until I canot access my mail server.
My windows 2000 server has remote desktop enabled.
I use remote desktop to access my server and have been for years now.
I have not been infront of the server for at least 2 years.
My problem is:
I cannot log into the server anymore, when I log in, I enter my username and Password, It authenticates
After it confirms that I have typed in a correct username and password, it tells me there are to many users logged on.
the problem is, I have no time out set. and because it is a windows 2000 Server i cannot log onto the console session.
Is there some way I could (with admin credentails) log onto the task manager of the server or restart the server or log off an idle user. Anythign that will let me get back into it.
All my email accounts are not set up and i just finished uninstalling the old mail program and installing the new mail accounts.
Noone will have email (personal and business accounts) until I can finish the setup.
Answer : URGENT! Remote Desktop;Terminal Services;2000 Server;too many connections, no access to local machine
Sorry I wasn't aware it didn't work with 2000. Interesting I just stumbled on the following, might be why I had thought otherwise, but apparently I am wrong
:
"The Mstsc Help and Support topic incorrectly states that you can use the /console switch to connect to the console session (session 0) of a specified Microsoft Windows 2000 Server-based computer."

There would be security concerns with being able to shut down a server without proper access to the domain. Likely the VPN is your best option, or you could set up access to the LAN in a different way such as 2nd remote desktop connection to a PC by changing the default listening port and router port forwarding:

Or, use a 3rd party tool such as

or

My preference would be the RRAS VPN. This would allow you to use shutdown commands or access another PC using the LAN IP with no port forwarding additions for RDP.
