Question : HP 520 Printer
|
|
How can I get HP 520 to work in win 98? Tried drivers found at HP site, no cigar.

Answer : HP 520 Printer

What previous printers were loaded on this system? If any were I would go through the win.ini and system.ini and try a find on the name of the printer if it was an epson try doing a find on epson or 600 or something like that if it highlights a line with epson then comment out the line like the following example
{ports} Lpt1=Epson 600 to comment it out you would put a semi colon a shown in the next example ;Lpt1= Epson 600 Also after you changed the DRVWPPQT.VXD file did you double check on it to make sure it stayed renamed ? it should now be named DRVWPPQT.OLD Have you ever gotten any messages saying the printer is not installed this could be do the win.ini being checkmarked as win.ini if it is then the driver was never installed correctly.
The next step you will need your windows Operating System Cd-Rom
Go to the printer window (start, settings, printers) right click on the HP520 select delete windows will ask you if you are sure you want to delete select yes if it comes up saying some files were only used by this printer do you wish to delete select yes again.
IMPORTANT: Make sure there are no other drivers at all in the printer window including fax drivers now go the next step
If this is not the case I would try doing the following if it has already not been suggested (this file is getting long to read) Go to start, settings, control panel, select "System" go to the device manager tab click the plus sign next to ports com and lpt Next double click lpt go to the driver tab and click on "update driver" Now a window will appear it will ask you if you want windows to search for driver or select from list......Select NO select from list then click on "show all compatible drivers" Select standard port type (((((NOTE: this is providing your printer does not require ECP to run if it does then Select ECP printer port when doing this.))))) and then printer port then click on Finish
Now reboot windows and reinstall the printer dirver using the Add printer wizard and use the driver from the windows cd-rom to reinstall it (DO NOT USE THE DISKS PROVIDED WITH THE PRINTER).
Now after install of the printer right click on it verify that it has a checkmark next to set as default. If it does not highlight that option and left click once.
Next go to start,, programs, accessories, Wordpad (NOT MICROSOFT WORD) type in test go to file then print verify that the name and type are the same they should both roughly say HP520 series printer or something like that. Next make sure where: Says Lpt1 go ahead and click "OK" it should be printing now.
If this does not fix my only ideas left is that you have a bad pin in your parallel port.
